Microloans and loan apps: how to spot an expensive loan
Evaluate a microloan or lending app by its rate, CAT, term, fees, total repayment and warning signs of fraud.
A small, short-term loan can still be extremely expensive. Fixed fees consume a larger share of a small principal, and a missed seven-, fourteen- or thirty-day deadline can trigger renewals and late charges.
For lending apps, cost is only part of the review. Verify that the institution exists, that its legal details match, and that it is not demanding an advance payment to “release” a loan.
Check the complete price
Look for the interest rate, Mexico’s CAT disclosure, origination and administration fees, insurance, late charges, payment frequency and total repayment. A $500 fee on a $5,000 loan already equals 10% of the amount borrowed.
Beware of daily rates. A figure that looks small per day can translate into a very high annual cost. See annual, monthly and daily loan rates.
Worked microloan example
Assume:
- Principal:
$5,000 - Annual rate used for the model:
96% - Term:
6 months - Initial fee:
$500
The estimated payment is $1,081.58, with $1,489.46 in interest. Including the fee:
6489.46 + 500 = 6989.46
You receive $5,000 and repay approximately $6,989.46. The short term and large relative fee produce a very high annualized cost.
Warning signs
- CAT or total repayment is not disclosed clearly.
- Fees are large relative to the principal.
- Late charges and renewal terms are vague.
- The company pressures you to accept immediately.
- It requests money upfront to activate or release credit.
- The legal entity does not appear in Mexico’s SIPRES registry.
- The app imitates the name or branding of a real institution.
SIPRES registration confirms institutional details; it does not certify that a product is affordable. Review permissions requested by the app and use only official channels.
Before accepting, enter every known charge in the loan calculator and compare cash received with total cash repaid. If the offer does not let you answer those questions, walk away.
Frequently asked questions

Yes. Convert it to a comparable period and include every fee.
What should I verify in a lending app?
The legal name, SIPRES registration, rate, CAT, fees, contract, app permissions and official contact channels.
