Monthly loan insurance: how it affects your payment

See how recurring loan insurance raises the all-in payment and what to ask about cost, coverage and cancellation.

Monthly insurance can make a loan substantially more expensive even when the interest rate looks reasonable. Separate the base principal-and-interest payment from the all-in amount leaving your account.

How insurance may be charged

Credit-linked coverage may include life, unemployment, disability, property or payment protection. The premium can be a fixed monthly charge, a percentage of the balance, an upfront payment or an amount financed into the loan.

Ask whether it is mandatory, exactly what it covers, how the premium changes and whether cancellation is possible.

Payment example

If the base loan payment is $2,643.55 and insurance costs $200 per month:

all-in payment = 2643.55 + 200 = 2843.55

For a $50,000 loan at 24% over 24 months:

ScenarioMonthly paymentTotal scheduled payments
Without insurance$2,643.55$63,445.32
With $200 monthly insurance$2,843.55$68,245.32

The insurance adds $4,800. It does not change the example’s interest rate, but it changes affordability and total cost.

Under Mexico’s methodology, required insurance may affect CAT. Compare official disclosures with all charges included rather than relying on a headline base payment.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Is the coverage mandatory or optional?
  • What events, limits and exclusions apply?
  • Is the premium fixed or balance-based?
  • Is it included in CAT?
  • Can it be canceled, and under what terms?
  • How is a claim filed?

Model the recurring premium in the loan calculator. See CAT vs. interest rate and loan origination fees for other costs.

Frequently asked questions
