What a BMI of 30 or higher means
Understand adult BMI values of 30 and above, the three obesity classes and the limits of this screening measure.
For most adults, a BMI of 30.0 or higher falls within the obesity category. It is commonly divided into:
| BMI | Adult category |
|---|---|
| 30.0–34.9 | Obesity, class 1 |
| 35.0–39.9 | Obesity, class 2 |
| 40.0 or higher | Obesity, class 3 |
These bands help organize screening and population data. They do not diagnose an individual’s health, determine the cause of their weight or measure body fat directly.
Interpret the result alongside waist measurement, blood pressure, glucose and lipid results, sleep, fitness, medication use and family history. High muscle mass can raise BMI without a comparable increase in body fat, although BMI may still provide useful context.
Confirm the measurement with the BMI calculator, using a current weight and height without shoes. If the result is 30 or above, a clinician can help assess overall risk and discuss realistic options without relying on the number alone.
