Overweight by BMI: what a result from 25 to 29.9 means

Understand the adult overweight BMI range, how it differs from obesity and what additional context to review.

For most adults, BMI from 25.0 through 29.9 is classified as overweight. Obesity begins at 30.0.

A BMI of 25 is therefore at the lower boundary, but calculate before rounding: 24.96 remains below 25, even if a whole-number display shows 25.

The category does not prove that a person has excess body fat. BMI includes muscle and cannot show fat distribution. It also does not diagnose diabetes, hypertension or any other condition. Think of the result as a prompt to review additional information rather than as a verdict.

Helpful context can include waist measurement, blood pressure, glucose and lipid results, fitness, family history and weight trend. For someone with substantial muscle, a body-composition estimate may help explain the result.

Use the BMI calculator to confirm the value. If weight has changed unexpectedly or other risk factors are present, discuss the complete picture with a health professional.
