Underweight by BMI: what a result below 18.5 means

For adults, a BMI below 18.5 falls in the underweight category. The calculation is straightforward—weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared—but its meaning depends on the person.

For example, someone who weighs 50 kg and is 1.70 m tall has a BMI of about 17.3:

50 / (1.70 x 1.70) = 17.3

That result is a screening signal, not a diagnosis. BMI does not reveal nutritional status, muscle mass or the reason for a low weight. A naturally slight build may produce a low value, but so can inadequate intake, an underlying condition, medication effects or recent illness.

Check that weight and height were entered accurately, then consider the trend. Unintentional loss, fatigue, weakness, missed periods, digestive symptoms or a BMI below 16 deserve prompt clinical attention. A clinician or registered dietitian can assess diet, symptoms and relevant tests rather than relying on the number alone.

The BMI calculator can confirm the arithmetic and show the adult reference category. It is not the correct interpretation tool for pregnancy or for children and teenagers.
