Percentage decrease: formula and examples
Calculate how much a value fell relative to its original amount and avoid using the wrong baseline.
Formula
percentage decrease = (original - new) / original x 100
If a price falls from 250 to 200:
(250 - 200) / 250 x 100 = 20%
The decrease is 50 units, or 20% of the original value.
The original amount matters. A drop from 100 to 80 is 20%, while a rise from 80 back to 100 is 25%. The same 20-unit difference uses a different baseline in each direction.
A discount applies a chosen percentage to a price. Percentage decrease measures the actual change between two known values. If you already know the percentage to remove, see how to subtract a percentage.
Use the percentage calculator in percentage-change mode and enter the original value first.
