What percentage is one number of another?
Learn the formula for finding what percentage one value represents out of another, with examples.
To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the part by the total and multiply by 100.
part / total x 100
For example, if you want to know what percentage 45 is of 200:
45 / 200 x 100 = 22.5%
That means 45 is 22.5% of 200.
Identify the part and the total
The key is choosing the right base:
- The part is the amount you are comparing.
- The total is the full amount or base.
In the question “what percentage is X of Y?”, X is usually the part and Y is the total. If you switch them, the result changes.
Common examples
| Question | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| What percentage is 18 of 60? | 18 / 60 x 100 | 30% |
| What percentage is 75 of 300? | 75 / 300 x 100 | 25% |
| What percentage is 120 of 500? | 120 / 500 x 100 | 24% |
| What percentage is 7 of 10? | 7 / 10 x 100 | 70% |

Where this is useful
In shopping, this calculation can show how much of a budget you used. If you spent $250 out of a $1,000 budget, you used 25%.
In grades, the part can be correct answers and the total can be all questions. If you got 7 out of 10 correct, your score is 70%.
In goals, the part can be current progress and the total can be the target. If you have completed 120 out of 500 units, your progress is 24%.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is reversing part and total. Calculating 45 out of 200 is not the same as calculating 200 out of 45. The second result is greater than 100%.
Another issue is using a total of zero. You cannot divide by zero, so the percentage is not defined when there is no base for comparison.
Calculate it automatically
Use the percentage calculator and choose the “X of Y” mode. It divides the part by the total, multiplies by 100 and shows the result with a short explanation.
