Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps means megabits per second and MB/s means megabytes per second. Since 1 byte equals 8 bits, 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s before losses.

Why does 100 Mbps not mean 100 MB/s?

Because network connections are usually advertised in bits per second. Divide Mbps by 8 to convert to MB/s.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

GB uses decimal units: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. GiB uses binary units: 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Why does the actual download take longer?

Wi-Fi, the server, congestion, a VPN, latency and provider limits can reduce effective speed.

Does the calculator test my internet connection?

No. It only estimates times from the data you enter. It does not run a speed test or call external services.

What does connection efficiency mean?

It is the percentage of nominal speed you actually use. A 100 Mbps connection at 90% efficiency is treated as 90 Mbps effective.

What speed do I need to download a large file in one hour?

Use Required speed mode, enter the file size and set one hour as the target. The tool returns the approximate nominal speed.

Can I use it for Docker images, backups or datasets?

Yes. The presets include common programming cases such as build artifacts, Docker images, database backups, datasets and ISOs.
